The river is not just a place. It becomes part of the craft.
This has long been one of the final steps in traditional Yuzen dyeing.

友禅流し。
染め上げた絹を、流れる川で洗います。
川は、ただ洗うための場所ではありません。
自然の流れもまた、この仕事の一部になります。
友禅染の仕上げとして、長く受け継がれてきた工程です。

Too much dye, and the gradient spreads farther than intended. Too little, and the color loses its softness.
In Hikizome, every gradient begins before the brush even touches the fabric. 😊

均一で美しいぼかしは、 刷毛を動かすことだけで生まれるものではありません。
まず大切なのは、染める面積に対して適切な量の染料を刷毛に含ませることです。
染料が多すぎれば、ぼかしは必要以上に広がります。 少なすぎれば、柔らかなぼかしは生まれません。

The border of this silk crepe furoshiki is dyed first, followed by a soft kasumi (mist) gradient inside.
The most important thing is to keep the amount of dye on the brush consistent every time.
I dye one pair of sides at a time, always aiming for the same amount of dye in the brush.
With experience, you begin to feel how much dye remains in the brush simply through the motion of removing the excess.
If the brush holds more dye than the area requires, the gradient spreads farther than intended.
In Hikizome, controlling the amount of dye is just as important as controlling the brush itself. 😊

正絹縮緬風呂敷の縁をぼかし、その内側にかすみぼかしを施しています。
最も大切なのは、刷毛に含ませる染料の量を毎回一定にすることです。
私は縦横を一組として染め、その都度、刷毛に同じ量の染料を含ませるようにしています。

Today, I’m back to painting my Rooted Daruma with Shimpaku juniper on absorbent paper.

Leaving the eyes untouched feels exactly the same as preserving the white areas in Hikizome dyeing.

Whether I’m painting on paper or dyeing fabric,
I’m reminded that, in the end, both are about guiding pigment with water. 😊

今日は再び、滲む紙で宿木だるまを描いています。

目の白を残す感覚は、引き染めをするときとまったく同じです。

紙に描くことも、布に染めることも、
結局は色素を水に乗せて運ぶ仕事なのだと改めて感じます😊

A simple sewing tip.
Drill a slightly oversized hole in a piece of wood, insert a sewing machine needle, and wedge a cotton swab stick into the gap to hold it firmly.
Make two of them, set them to the length you need, and use them as guides to measure fabric consistently. 😊
ちょっとした縫製の工夫です。
木に少し大きめの穴を開けてミシン針を差し込み、 隙間に綿棒の芯を入れるだけでしっかり固定できます。
これを2つ作って好みの間隔に置けば、 生地を引っ掛けながら同じ長さで送ることができます😊

I'm sharing this piece while it's still in progress.
The salt isn't only for creating texture. In Japan, salt is often used as a symbol of cleansing. I like to bring that quiet gesture into my own creative process.
This time I chose a paper that doesn't allow the pigment to bleed, so each branch remains crisp and defined.
The eyes will be painted only after the paper has been backed.
There's still one important step before this Daruma comes to life. 😊

塩は模様を作るためだけではありません。 日本では、塩は古くからお清めの象徴として用いられてきました。 私もその静かな所作を、制作の中に取り入れています。
今回は顔料が滲まない紙を選び、一枝一枝をはっきりと残しました。
目入れは、裏打ちを終えてから行います。
このだるまに命が宿るまで、もうひとつ大切な工程が残っています。😊

This is my Rooted Daruma with Shimpaku juniper, painted with natural indigo pigment harvested in 2025.
I had promised myself I would begin this piece before the end of June.
It was close, but today I finally got started.
From here, I'll nurture it little by little. 😊

ようやく、紙に向かう時間が戻ってきました。
2025年産の天然藍顔料で描く、 真柏の宿木だるまです。
6月中に始めると決めていた作品。 ぎりぎりでしたが、今日ようやくスタートできました。
ここから少しずつ育てていきます😊

Preparing the Indigo Field

Last year, the weed-control fabric + mulch system worked well, so I’m using it again this year.

Tucking the mulch securely into the ridge turned out to be harder than expected. Just like last year, I only figured out the proper technique near the end of the job.

I’m writing the process down here as a reminder for next season.

Hopefully I’ll remember to come back and read this post next year 😊

1. Insert the top edge of the mulch into the ridge.
2. Lift the mulch and pull soil from inside the ridge onto the top edge to anchor it.
3. Insert the bottom edge with your left hand.
4. Tap the mulch from above, pushing soil onto the bottom edge to lock it in place.

去年、防草シート+マルチ農法が成功したので今年もこれでいきます。

マルチを畝に挟み込んでいくのが思いのほか難しく、終わり頃にようやくコツが掴めるのが、去年もそうだったなと思い出しました。

ここに手順を記して、来年の備えにしたいと思います。

来年この投稿を見ることを忘れません様に😊

上のラインを差し込む→シートをめくり上のラインに中から土を寄せて固定→下のラインを左手で差し込みむ→シートの上から叩いて下のラインに土を寄れて固定する。

I’ve started sketching skulls again.

The last time I worked on this motif was in July 2024.

There are several motifs I keep wanting to draw.

They circle around inside me, and at some point, they come back again.

But it does not feel like returning to the same place.

It feels more like a spiral, slowly moving forward.

That is why I can face the motif now from a different point in my own timeline.

That feels like a discovery, and also a quiet joy.

For this motif, I would like to work with gold and sumi ink.

前回とは違う時間軸の自分で向き合えることが、発見であり、喜びでもあります。
